With track and field, swimming, basketball, tennis, football, and a wide arena of other sports, this marks the time where the future is set and Chinas sporting legacy will continue forward.With all of the sporting in the air however, Beijing is still the nations capital city. T21、his is the city where government and politics are its identity, it is a city that is used to being the center of China and deservedly so; from its imperial past to its post-Olympic future, the city of Beijing has added all of the elements that will make it one of those true capital cities of the wor22、ld: its new subway system, highways and infrastructure, Olympic venues and event buildings, the mixed-use and residential projects that dot the city, and the cultural facilities that rise around Tiananmen Square all add to the luster of this majestic and important city.While Beijing has all these el23、ements there is one thing that it lacks, a center showcase for sports, a mixed-use hub that combines all aspects of sports and of sports culture. In every culture there are places where the citizens of the city honor and revel in their sports heroes. In the United States, it is the baseball and foot24、ball stadiums and their entertainment districts; in England and Europe it is their rich football clubs. However, the celebration of sports in Asia is relatively a new phenomenon and it is difficult to identify where a sports-related cultural district that is successful.Our aim in the development of 25、the Longtan Sports District is the creation of Asia and Chinas first and most successful sports district, a benchmark. Our aim is to create a vital and robust place in Beijing that capitalizes on many aspects of community building, so that this place can become a true 24-hour a day, seven days a wee26、k, 365-days a year place where sports is celebrated, studied, and honored. It is a site blessed with an abundance of natural amenities, water, and as the home for seasoned athletes that have 32、honored their country through their endeavors. Over time however, Longtans stature and its ability to serve the people has diminished. In its present condition, one can see how development pressures have slowly nibbled away Longtans edges in piecemeal fashion, without regard for its cherishment and 33、overall identity. It is critical to recognize that now represents a rare opportunity, through our proposed vision, for the city of Beijing, the district of Chongwen, for developers and designers, and more importantly for the people, to reverse the trend and to restore and reinforce Longtan as a vibr34、ant and robust identity for the community.We seek to establish Longtan as a Sports District that celebrates a new style of live, work, and play; one that draws upon the spirit and culture of sports; one that honors the countrys seasoned athletes, its modern-day ambassadors, who have represented thei35、r country through their endeavors; and one that reestablishes Longtans position as a strong southeastern cultural and commercial anchor and gateway for the city. We want people from all walks of life to come, to stay and experience, to leave with memories and stories to share, to come back again wit36、h excitement in their blood.The proposed vision for Longtan is about creating a strong central heart that celebrates the spirit of sports and the natural and cultural amenities which already exists; intertwining them throughout the site and having them spill out into the district. The dilapidated am37、usement park is replaced with a modern contemporary venue, an extreme sports zone that provides spectacle, entertainment, festival spaces and events, and encourages people of all ages to promote a healthier lifestyle and to physically challenge themselves. It is the modern-day gathering, the modern-38、day reprieve, from the “hustle and bustle” of the city. This heart radiates outward around the lakes and provides a series of other related sports/healthy programs and activities: to our Star Pedestrian Street, Olympic Sports Museum, Youth Activity Center, sports clubs, media and exhibition zone, sp39、orts bureaus, cluster of western and local restaurants, honorary athletic housing, and water-related activities on the lakes.The Longtan Sports District is organized to be porous with a series of important gateways along its edges that draw the city in; offering a multitude of journeys for people to40、 enjoy and experience. The Star Pedestrian Street to the west is designed as an avenue to the nations sports heroes; where people can see the footprints and statues of its honored sports stars, a one-on-one game between Yao Ming and Yi Jianlian, a race against Liu Xiang in a hurdling event, see an e41、xhibition game between Li Na and Maria Sharapova, and more. The mall towards the northwest corner is designed as an important southern commercial anchor for the 6-million plus annual visitors that come to the Temple of Heaven and for residents. An underground connection to the Line 5 metro-station l42、inks to a north-south underground retail street, bringing people up into the Star Pedestrian Street.A new connection to the second ring road along the south brings people to the Extreme Sports Zone and adjacent Olympic Museum and Youth Activity Center, forming a “cultural sports triangle” for the ci43、ty. These “pearls,” are strung together to form a necklace which encircles the three lakes, providing a wide variety of experiential and memorable moments and activities for people to enjoy. Development program builds upon a sports and recreational theme, e59、xpanding on current and proposed sports venues and facilities, creating a strong sports culture district and promoting awareness towards healthy living. Furthermore, the three lakes are opened up to form one lake, representative of the three.Rail infrastructure is redesigned to become a featured bri60、dge as it passes over West and Central Lake, becoming a visual element that adds character to the site. The road networks are reevaluated and reconfigured to soften the existing condition of hard edges around the site, creating the variety of views and focus point along the greenway. The design buil61、ds upon and reinforces the wide variety of natural amenities of the site, promoting a tour of sorts in ecological uses. Along the lakes are a series of arboretum walks and gardens, showcasing native therapeutic and medicinal herbs and plants. The development program provides for a healthcare and spo62、rts recovery resort, along with spas and support medical facilities for athletic patients, the young, and the elderly.Star Pedestrian Street is treated in the form of an open-air promenade, with a canal that meanders from the mall to West Lake. A bridging landform is created over the rail line to fo63、rm a connection to the central island activities, with a potential hill top restaurant/observatory to view all of the lakes. We envision the corner of Tiantan Dong Lu and Ti Yu 99、Guan Lu as an important gateway for people as they come and make their journey to the Temple of Heaven, the Star Pedestrian Street, and to the activities along the Longtan lakes; providing not just a visual experience for the current 6-million plus annual visitors that come to this area, but also in100、 places to stop, shop, interact, learn, and enjoy.We believe that the mall also represents an important component to the framework of Longtan and to the city.
