The legacy of Minhang will be that space that was never built. In both case studies, we look at how sports, recreation, a38、nd parkland can define the city and can bring together not just the identity but more important-ly the life of the city. Although both offer these assets, they are quite different in what they demonstrate.We have chosen to examine the Golden Gate Park in San Francisco for its seamless integration of39、 a 4 km long urban park which offers unlimited access to a diverse range of recreational, athletic, leisure, and cultural programs into the urban grid.We have also chosen to examine the recently award-ed Olympics bid in London which proposes a green sports corridor that defines the framework and str40、uc-ture for future urban development. This is an urban regeneration project that capitalizes on the sports and open space system that actually becomes the mus-cles or ligaments that tie together the urban skeleton.For Minghang, we have learned from both these ap-proaches and have incorporated them i41、nto our de-sign. This is a result of relatively unplanned and market-driven land development strategies in its recent history. Minhang lacks a strong urban framework that can unify the city and create a coherent image and identity. The only framework84、 is a road network that loosely connects these fragmented pieces.The key natural open space amenities are currently planned to be stand-alone elements within the city. The Forest Park and ecological canal corridor are planned as separate pieces with very little relation to the rest of the city. The 85、water canal network is also not fully integrated into the overall master plan.Create a New Coherent Urban Framework that Captures the Essence of “Green City, Sport City, Life City.”A Bold Urban Intervention: A Unifi ed City through a Green Urban FrameworkBold interventions in the early planning stag86、es of every world class city have defi ned the form and fame of that city. New Yorks Central Park, Paris Champs Elysses, Shanghais Fuxing Park and Bostons famous Emerald Necklace have all become postcard images of each city and have done two important things for their host cities. They have created 87、an organized framework within which urban development can occur and they have created some of the highest value real estate in the ar-eas adjoining these remarkable city assets. Given the fragmented pattern of Minhangs recent urban development, Minhang requires such a bold intervention. The element 88、which has the strongest ability to unify these fragmented pieces into a united whole is a strong and large public realm component in the form of an Open Space Framework from which development occurs.This public component is proposed to be a fully integrated open space system that offers a variety of89、 program ranging from forest park to urban park. This will be the green glue that unifi es the city. It is here that the new image of Minhang will be seen. Integrating Nature with the CityNature and open space is a critical component of any city. How can we create a plan that will focus development potential into Minhang? How can Minhang improve its competitiveness in the urban arena? If we ca98、n answer these questions,we will make a unique place in all of Shanghai and the land value of Minhang will undoubtedly increase in relation to the surrounding areas.Creating a New Center for Diverse DistrictsA Dynamic Center Surrounded by Diverse DistrictsThe creation of a City Center requires the c99、reation of a “Place”, not just a destination. At the moment, the New City Sports Center is a destination where people come and play and watch sports. However, the goal of Minhang is to identify the entire city as an “International Sports City”. This will require a greater development of mixed uses o100、f commercial, retail, entertainment, and leisure complementing the sports center as a concentrated central core.Surrounding this core are residential developments. The size of residential development and their relationship to its natural surrounding and context help defi ne the “boundaries” and char101、acter of each district. Within each district are neighborhoods and communities with their own centers and open spaces. The key strategy is to guide residential developers to build neighborhoods and communities in the design language and spatial confi guration appropriate to the site.
