from all over world,as well as more regional visitors from other,more restric-tive Chinese cities.TRANSITATIONHaikou is conveniently located on the Southern end of China17、.Its international airport is situated within the capital city,seventeen kilometres north of the development site.Daily flights connect Haikou International Airport with all Chinese cities,and also to other Asian countries.HaikouMeilanInternationalAirportisthelargestandnewestair-portontheislandofHai18、naninthePeoplesRepublicofChina.The airport terminal has 60,200 square metres of space,with 45 check-in counters and 11 security checkpoints.The airport is staffed by 565 employees serving 6,000,000 passengers a year.A railway links Haikou to the mainland.A ferry service transits the railway cars,alo19、ng with other motor vehicles across the Qiongzhou straight.Three main highways connect Haikou to other parts of Hainan,runnning east,west,and south through the middle of the ISLAND(20 kilometers off the mainland)is the largest of the 200 islands that make up Hainan Province and is home to 8 million people.Hainan Island is a popular hon-eymooning spot and tourist destination with beaches,warm winters,goo21、d food,Portuguese colonial buildings,outgoing people and markets with live cobras and sea turtles.In the early 1990s developers decided to turn it into the“Hawaii of China.”For a brief period Hainan was the fast-est growing economic region in China.People from all over China came to make their fortu22、ne.By the mid 2000s it had resurrected itself as prime tourism destination.It welcomed 3.7 million visitors in 2004,a 20 percent increase from 2003.In the past,the island mainly drew tourists from Hong Kong and Singapore.These days more and more 3.9 kilometers.There is 17 kilometers between the staging area and airport and 25 kilomerters between the train station and the site.The airport will be the 24、major gateway to Haikou city and as well tourist destination and an excellent location for the second home market.PrecipitationHaikou receives around 1,700 m33、illimeters of precipitation on average each year.The region is rainy,especially during the summer months,and can support a wide variety of vegetation.Stormwater management is an issue,especially on the main-land.There will also be good opportunity for rainwater harvest-ing.SolarRadiationSolar radiat34、ion is about 500 W/m2 on average throughout the year,with a dip in summer.ProtectedAreasThere is a perserved mangrove zone in the bay to the east of the site.A clear green belt links outskirt of the built up zone of Haikou city with this wetland.A national geographic park is located on the south of 35、the greenbelt.EcologyHaikou consists of 2 squre kilometer of wetland along its north-ern coast with mangrove growing around them.The main hu-man impacts arise from the real estate development,land recla-mation and oil pollution.Air QualityHaikou has the second highest rated air quality in China,seco36、nd only to Kunming.WaterHaikousnetexportsofoilaredecreasingbecauseofincreas-ing energy consumption.All natural gas produced in Haikou is consumedlocally.Haikousgrowingdemandforelectricpowergeneration is likely to cause it to become a net natural gas im-porter in coming years.The Haikou Voyage Island37、 masterplan responds to the natural surroundings and climate to create a harmonised en-vironment maximising comfort and mi-nimising resource use.CLIMATEANALYSISHaikou Island is on the northern edge of the torrid zone and ex-periences tropical storms and typhoons during the period be-tween April and 38、October.The climate is defined as humid sub-tropical and features hot summers and very mild winters with high humidity.Wind:Winds are predominantly from the south and south east.During the autumn and winter,winds tend to come from the south east,shifting gradually to the south during the spring and 39、summer,and then scattering again to the south and south east during August.Winter winds are generally 15-20C,spring and autumn winds hover around 25C,and summer winds tend to be in the range of 30-35C.Sun:Haikou is close to the tropics and thus the sun passes nearly directly overhead.This means that40、 the north and south facades of buildings experience high sun angles while the east and west facades are hit by low angle sun in the morning and afternoon,respectively.Temperature&Humidity:The average temperature ranges from 15C during winter to 33C during summer with an average low/high range of 1041、C/25C during winter and 25C/35C in summer.These temperatures are within or near comfortable levels.Humidity,however,tends to be high and ranges from about 60%in winter to above 80%during many secondary species to increase their population through the provision of a juvenile nursery safe fro214、m many predators,in turn attracting other species to populate the area.It is likely that a special growing medium will be necessary to encourage healthy colonisation and minimise initial mortality rates.117SEADEFENCEDefending the new development island against the aggressive Typhoon wave is a princi215、pal consideration in the integration and amenity value of the coastline.The shore protection drawings issued to the competition teams indicate large,heavy engineered sections with massive blocks rising up to a level of+9.0m to+10.0m,which is approximately 8m above the mean high tide level.Although i216、t is not clear where these ACAD sections are located,it is considered that they are based upon the assumption that all of the typhoon wave energyisreceivedattheislandfrontage.There is a potential alternative to this assumption which will enable the island shore protection to be less intrusively robu217、st,lowering the crest height.This alternative requires the formation of a shallow area seaward of Voyage Island,design to a level and durability able to intercept a significant
