The design expression is drawn from the contrast between these mountains and the city grid and the strength of the mountains 30、as sculptural objects in the city. The expressions are also inspired by the rich tradition of Chi-nese landscape painting in which mountains and landforms are often an important and meaningful subject in the paint-ing. The design is developed in layers with the city grid articulated as a colorful ma31、trix of paving which serves as a canvas for the placement of sculptural objects. These sculptural objects are intended to be abstractions of the surrounding mountain forms with trees and groundcover representing mountain plantings. Just as the city deforms and reshapes around the mountain to-pographies, the linear pattern deforms as sculptural movements that appear in the plaza. The design uses the edge of the building as a frame and creates a geometric abstraction of a traditional landscape painting into a visu-ally striking graphic.
