3、ronts are places where people, plants and animals coexist together, creating an synergy that elevates an urban landscape into a thriving and harmonious balance of complex stystems - where modern infrastructure meets natural ecology. This balance depends heavily on connectivity, both on a micro and m

4、acro scale. Without such dynamic connections, the potential for the area is diminished, and its vision for the future left unclear. In many cases, the industrial and shipping functions of our cities over the past century have resulted in degraded riverfront environments and constructed physical barr

5、iers. As the viability of former uses and activities has shifted and people are rediscovering the social and economic values of water, great opportunities exist to reinvent them as vital anchors to bring new life and investment into existing urban settlements. The Xiaguan Riverfront is an opportunit

18、d Yangzte River as well as the proximity to the historic city wall and extensive system of canals. The surrounding topography and future infrastructure investments add to the visibility of the site bringing higher value to this part of the city. The goals of the master plan are to use this opportuni

24、 Riverfront is simultaneously located outside the historic wall of the city and behind the engineered system of levees that control flooding along the Yangzte River. As a result, the area has evolved in an organic way that has been limited by its lack of identity and isolation from the civic and soc

25、ial structure of the Nanjing. The challenge is to re-imagine the degraded riverfront environment and overcome the constructed physical barriers. The Yangtze provided the city not only with critical nourishment and ecology, but also

39、 with an invaluable link to the rest of China. It was the artery that supplied the lifeblood necessary for growth and dominance in the region. Indeed Nanjings strategic location along the banks of the river formed the foundations for its personality and vision as a hub of growth, innovation and conn

Through the years, the river has increasingly been isolated from the rest of the city, separating the people from the natural world that inspired and allowed the growth of their now-great city. Its inaccessibility has left the city without a visible link to its past and without the relatio

41、nship to water that has so fundamentally defined its character and identity over the years.
